Prepare to Pass

Studying for exam at desk in the library

At American Water College, we are committed to helping you prepare for success on your certification exams. This first post in a three-part series will help to lay the groundwork for your studies. First off, let’s take a look at a couple of “Rules” to follow while preparing for your certification exam.

RULE #1

No Negative Talk

Your attitude directly affects your study. Phrases like “I’m not smart enough,” “I can’t do math,” “This is dumb,” or “I don’t need to know this” are common lies that we tell ourselves. In reality, most of these are self-fulfilling prophecies that will serve only to derail you before you have a chance to succeed.

We would all do well to learn from the successful men and women in our lives, and focus on the positive rather than the negative.

RULE # 2

Make a Commitment

Committing to a study plan will increase your effectiveness in preparing to pass your exam.  You need to decide that you want to learn, decide that you can learn, and decide that the reward is worth your effort.  As you prepare for your exam you need to give a 100% effort, because the knowledge you gain will benefit you, and the people you serve.  This knowledge is your “key” to unlocking future “doors” in your career.

"You have all of the tools necessary to memorize and work through common exam problems"

Your brain is a phenomenal creation!  The brain is designed to remember; if you can remember where you live, or remember your name, you are capable of remembering exam material.

The brain is also designed to reason; this gives you the ability to use your knowledge to solve problems

The brain was designed, believe it or not, to do arithmetic; a common fear that many people have about their exam is the math portion.  If you can add, subtract, multiply and divide, you can ace the math on your exam.

Your brain was designed to learn; you have all of the tools necessary to memorize and work through common exam problems.  As you focus on the positive, and stick to your commitment to give it your best shot, you can prepare to succeed on your certification exam.
